LG Electronics established LG Shield to enhance security measures in response to the increasing security threats associated with the widespread adoption of AI and IoT devices, as well as the tightening of security regulations worldwide.
LG Shield is not merely a security solution but LG's proprietary security brand, integrating processes and technologies for comprehensive protection. It applies essential security technology solutions across the company, making it adaptable to a wide range of products.
webOS, as LG Electronics' platform, incorporates various LG Shield solutions. Additionally, LG Shield supports multiple operating systems, including Android, Linux, and RTOS. It is also applied to products connected to the ThinQ Service and the ThinQ mobile app.
The LG Shield certification process includes not only internal LG-SDL and LG-PSRT but also recognized external certification processes such as Common Criteria (C.C), UL, TÜV, and SafeShark.
According to the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, which categorizes security measures into Identify → Protect → Detect → Respond/Recover, our current level is at Detection and Response. Our goal is to advance to the Recovery level in the future.
Updates for LG Shield-applied products include on-demand updates, which promptly respond to newly discovered vulnerabilities, and regular updates, which are conducted alongside product Maintenance Releases (MR). By industry standards, the response time for vulnerability patches is typically 60 to 90 days.
On-device AI products, such as PCs and hubs, are still connected to networks. The ultimate goal is to balance performance, cost, and privacy efficiently across Cloud and Edge environments. LG Shield is planned to be applied to all such products.
Additionally, the DQ-C chip used in appliances and the O24 (a11 Processor) chip used in TVs have been introduced as on-device AI chips, supporting empathetic intelligence.
In 2024, LG Shield certification was applied only to new models to enhance security standards. However, the goal is to extend LG Shield to all network-connected products in the future.
